Man gets 10 years for defilement

FRANCISTOWN: A 23-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years by the High Court for defilement. Mathata Bonnie was locked up by Justice Zibani Makhwade for the defilement of a 13-year-old girl two years ago in Ghani village. Before the judgement, Bonnie called two witnesses in mitigation.

The first was a headman of Mohembo village who told the court that he knew Bonnie as a law-abiding citizen and a useful member of the community.
The headman told the court that he was surprised to learn about the charge and the conviction of the suspect.
  

The second mitigation witness was Bonnie's mother who was equally surprised to learn about the charge and conviction of his son. 
In his judgement, Makhwade said the suspect is a first offender and from the evidence given by the headman and his mother, he was a law-abiding citizen. "He was 21 at the time of commission of the offence and immature.
