In an interview with Arts & Culture, Tlhatlogo Sera Madiba, who is the director of Miss Hope pageant, said the event features a showcase of fashion from recycled material designs and ramp walking by contestants to promote waste material recycling, creative thinking and problem solving.

She added that it included talent session as a way of emphasising the point of having a piece of mind executing one’s skill while saving the planet. “Trashion Show calls for upcoming designers to showcase their designs at the event unlike other years where only contestants designed their clothes. This year, contestants design their trash attire and called for designers to showcase their signature design.

The call for the upcoming designers ends on July 23, 2022.

The event is themed, ‘Designs from trash to save the planet'. The aim is for contestants to design their own clothes using trash, as a way of instilling the importance of trash to the community or fashion world to save the planet,” she said. She explained that the mandate was for contestants, upcoming designers and parents to work together to design their clothes, create room of bonding and creativity.

The winners will walk away with talent and creative awards after being judged from talent articulation and how creative they were in designing their attires. Madiba added that upcoming designers would also be judged and awarded with ‘Best Hope Pageants Botswana Trashion Show Design Award.’ She said the award was meant to measure the success of the designer’s self-execution through the Trashion Show journey of which was a great way to highlight and underline their design quality.

She added that contestants would be interviewed based on what inspired their trash outfits and their relevance on colour, design and personality. Hope Pageant is a Christian-based pageant focusing on community service.

The pageantry is a system for women and children who are passionate about making a significant difference in their communities, touching the lives of others and being a positive role model. She stated that the pageant emphasis not only on physical attributes like height or body shape. “The Hope journey starts with auditions and culminates at an international event held annually in Cape Town, South Africa. Contestants are required to have a community focused project that will eventually contribute a large percentage of the final score they get for crowning,” she said.

She said it allocates 50% of the finalists’ scores towards interview judging with a focus on their character, values and community projects during their period of being a finalist.

The idea started after Ingrid Burger founded her project, Acting Hope, at the beginning of 2012.

Acting Hope is a registered charity, mainly using drama as a therapy in healing broken children and giving hope and confidence to children of communities in South Africa.

Acting Hope has been extremely successful in its growth, consisting of child volunteers using their own talents as well to implement various sustainable projects throughout the communities of South Africa. Categories for Hope Pageants are Miss Pre-Teen Hope (9-13), Miss Teen Hope (14-18) and Miss Hope (19-27 single ladies).
