According to MVA Fund-Francistown Branch Manager, Kite Nkala, the seminar sought to promote positive behaviour, daily living skills, caregiver networking, and understanding post-discharge management.
“This initiative aligns with the MVA Fund's transformation drive, which emphasises collaboration and recognises the crucial role that caregivers play in supporting claimants' transition and adherence to discharge instructions,” he said.
He emphasised that the fund acknowledges the challenges faced by caregivers and often strive to equip them with necessary support to effectively manage the medical and functional limitations of claimants. “The aim of the seminar was to improve the caregiver's ability to deliver high-quality care, resulting in better outcomes and well-being for both individuals involved (claimants and caregivers),” he said.
Nkala added that to ensure that the caregiver seminar catered for the diverse needs of caregivers and claimants with disabilities, the Fund conducted a thorough assessments of their respective needs.
He explained that the Fund used its comprehensive database to categorise claimants' injuries to design suitable training activities for all the attendees. Feedback received from caregivers and claimants who participated in the seminar was very positive.
Most notable caregivers expressed appreciation to the MVA for organising the seminar, stating that it relieved them of stress and made them realise they were not alone in their caregiving journey. They however, highlighted the need for regular counseling to cope with stress associated with their roles as caregivers.
