outh African afro pop sensation Zahara on Friday brought her 'A' game to the first Mascom live session of the year. Zahara real name Bulelwa Mkutukana demonstrated why she is one of the best Afro soul singers to emerge from Africa when she mesmerised a fully packed Botswana craft venue with her many loved hits.
Although the show was supposed to take place last year but later postponed to this year, Zahara sure started the year with a bang. As many people who came from different walks of lives filled the place to full capacity, local house band famously known as Team Distant took to stage and reminded people why they were gathered there - to have fun.
The group which is made up of four young men nearly stole the show from Zahara when they gave a splendid performance.
Things started to heat up when they performed their hit singles, Oni Korota and Kave ngoma. But the biggest surprise came when queen of traditional music, Maxi stepped on stage and performed alongside the group. She raised the bar with her flawless voice performing her songs which she says are currently being perfected in studio.
The song bird that has been away from the stage had fans eating from the palms of her hand as she sang and danced seductively. Although the group managed to entertain the revellers somehow many were eagerly waiting for the woman of the moment, Zahara. The suspense was killed when she immediately stepped on stage. Dressed in a very beautiful black and yellow dress that complimented her figure and hairstyle, the singer was welcomed with a big cheering. Kick starting her performance with a song she mentioned was a prayer for Africa, Zahara got the revellers off their seats and into the dance floor.
She continued with her hit songs that included 'loliwe', 'Ndiwe' and her other songs from her debut album before performing hits from her current release, Phendula.
The icing on cake was when she finally sang the title track Phendula, the song bird immediately got emotional and cried during the performance.
As the surprised audience sang along to the lyrics of the song, Zahara finally found her voice and joined in making a beautiful end to the night.
Speaking at the press conference, Zahara mentioned that she was quite impressed and excited about this album. She said she is sure her fans will love it as it shows how she has grown a lot vocally and also in her writing skills.
Speaking about the song Phendula she said, 'My single Phendula talks about seeking answers from God.
A lot is happening from people being victims of crime. There's a lot of poverty and unemployment. All I am saying is that God should answer our prayers.'
She further mentioned that she upped her standards and with this album she decided to feature diverse artists so that it reflects her maturity.
Featured artistes include Ladysmith Black Mambazo, People's Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, twins from idols Anele & Neliswa Mxhakaza, Mukengerwa Tresor Riziki, and Nigerian artist 2 Face Idibia.
