This is the fundamental skill Mpho Mosinyi had to possess when she ventured into the world of baking. Trained in Interior Design, Mosinyi slowly developed a love for baking, which ultimately led her to venture into selling cakes and other baked goodies. She makes a variety of tasty products including; cakes, scones, muffins, and brownies.

While Mosinyi only started selling her baked  treats last year, she always had a love for making sweet delights for members of her family and friends. She said a number of her friends after tasting her baking asked her to consider selling her products.

She took the advice and started a small business.  She explained to Arts & Culture that baking is a skill that needs lots of practice for one to perfect the skill. To reach a state of perfection she had to do a lot of trial and error, perfecting her recipes.

“When you start baking you do a lot of trials, and should it happen that whatever you were making does not come out right, you identify where you might have gone wrong and correct the mistake until you get it right,” she said.

Arts & Culture tasted some of Mosinyi’s baking, and they were delicious! One thing is clear about Mosinyi; she is a perfectionist who puts a lot of hard work into her work. The variety she presented included orange flavoured muffins, children’s favourite brownies, banana bread, carrot cake, and tea scones.   People with a sweet tooth will attest to the fact that beautifully decorated cakes and muffins don’t always match the taste. Some bakers are strong in terms of décor, but not taste. For Mosinyi, the most important element is good taste. “I’m not saying that presentation is not important. The décor on cakes plays an important part, as it is the aspect that will attract potential buyers, but to me it does not make much sense for me to give people beautiful cakes, which taste horrible, because they will never buy my cakes again,” she said.

She said while she bakes a variety of cakes, including vanilla and chocolate cakes, her carrot cake seems to be most popular, as her clients demand it more.

While she mostly makes a variety of sweet muffins, she said she also makes savoury muffins, which include vegetable muffins.  Mosinyi who trades under Line Works, said her business is still small, explaining that she currently get orders from catering companies and individuals.

“Most of my clients are parents who want muffins for their children to take to school, and catering companies, some of which supply food during corporate events and other functions,” she said. Mosinyi dreams of one day opening a coffee shop and a bakery. “Hopefully over the years, I will be able to open a few of them around town, and in other towns,” she said.

Also in the baker’s future plan is to introduce all kinds of breads, including pastries.
