Music industry bids Tops farewell

The goodbye session will be held at Bojanala Waterfront in Gaborone. Tops, who is one of Botswana’s best promoters, has decided to retire from the creative industry and this was announced during a media brief this week.
During his whole career as a promoter, Tops has groomed many of today’s well established local musicians like Bonno Ngaka also known as Dj Collastro, Odirile Sento also known as Vee Mampeezy.
Speaking at the media brief, the mayor of Gaborone City Kagiso Thutlwe applauded the good job Tops has done in making the music industry accessible to many.
Thutlwe said despite lack of funds, he was able to pull through events. “Tops! I commend you, and your children for celebrating the works of your hand and also appreciating you while you are still alive,” he highlighted.
One of the people who worked hand in hand with Tops, Dennis Alexander said it was very noble of him (Tops) to actually hand the boxing gloves while he is still alive. “A lot could have not done that, I know there are times where you sit and say I could have done this or that, you’ve done my friend, be proud, you deserve it,” Alexander proudly said.
Local musicians who took time off their schedules to appreciate Tops were also given an opportunity to speak their part about their journey with Tops in the music industry.
DJ Colastro said he met Tops in the late 90s when he started his music career. “He has taught me a lot, the knowledge I have gotten from you is priceless.” For his part, LaTimmy said Tops saw his dream and helped him live it. “ I am still rising because of you, thank you,” LaTimmy, said in gratitude. “I can only commend the good job that Tops has done by unpacking the music industry as a business,” Assistant Minister Of Youth Empowerment Sport and Culture Development Philip Makgalemele said during the event.
“I would also ask for monuments to be named after him, be it road, streets or anything just to remember him and his good job,” Makgalemele said.
