A science scholar follows art passion

The young man is a self-taught visual artist who does realism art. In an interview with Arts & Culture, Tlhako said he specialises in graphite and charcoal media. He explained that he has been drawing all his life, saying it has been part of him for a very long time.

Tlhako added that he developed his skills when he was about 11-years-old. “I then realised that I could draw a noticeable human face. I did a lot of pencil-based portraits. I improved my drawing skills as I continuously practiced and I eventually got so much better at drawing and I now make detailed artworks. The idea of progression inspires and motivates me and I am always eager to do better on my next drawing.

I believe that there is so much that I still need to do to improve my craft,” he pointed out. Tlhako added that all his art pieces were his favourite because he gives them his all. He, however, added that he had one painting that he loved the most because it was challenging, big and more detailed.

He also said from the responses he got from the public, it was evident that people loved his work. Tlhako also said his drawings were mostly commissioned so he did not really have a theme.

He added that he would one day find time to make themed drawings. Despite his immense talent, this young man has not yet exhibited his work anywhere. He revealed that one of his biggest challenges is that he is always overwhelmed by work. Other challenges are that art in Botswana is not valued as a profession because people did not see the need to spend money on art. “In short, art in Botswana is not appreciated and recognised that much.

The other challenge I face as an artist is shortage of materials. I always buy my art material online because I cannot find them locally. Acquiring the skills I have right now to me is an achievement although I am still improving. I would appreciate the help from anyone who wishes to assist.
