Real name Lushen Kebatlege, DJ Ngwazi who has been Master KG’s DJ since 2019, released Uthando late last year. But the song managed to catch momentum in the busy festive season and got revellers grooving. The song showed that he is not just a DJ for one of South Africa’s most popular music artists but an artist of note. In the song, he features contributions from Nokwazi, Lowsheen and Caltonic SA. In an interview with Arts & Culture this week, DJ Ngwazi said he will drop the new album on January 22.

He also said he will drop the second single before the album release date. “I want to enter the South African Music Awards (SAMA) this year no wonder I needed this album,” he said. Detailing how Uthando came about, he revealed that as they played various beats in the studio, Nokwazi couldn’t relate to the song at first but they then had to translate the lyrics for everything to work out. He said they didn’t really see any huge potential for the song because it was already late in the festive season when it was released. “Then the song started trending on TikTok and the song exploded in Namibia first before other southern African countries.

After that I received a lot of videos and people tagging me on social media,” he recalled. DJ Ngwazi was grateful and called the song Uthando a ‘blessing’ because it was his first song in SA. “Now people can relate and say there is a Motswana artist called Ngwazi topping the charts and doing well,” he said. DJ Ngwazi also said he is shooting a music video for Uthando and he will release it soon because it is long overdue. He said everything will be a debut no wonder the year 2022 will be so special to him.

He said the song has already started generating money on digital platforms. In order to show appreciation for his home village Thamaga, DJ Ngwazi said he is planning something in September. “People appreciate me and I am happy,” he said. He said he didn’t want to drop anything during lockdown because it was never going to work. He said this year is the right time to push his music and market it.

He also said even though he didn’t feature any Motswana artist, there are a number of big musicians who will be featured in the album. He said he had sent a couple of material to some local artists but they haven’t worked on them in time. DJ Ngwazi said he is still growing and far from where he wants to be. “I want to win SAMAs and AFRIMMAs and top international charts. I feel that I am on the right track,” he concluded.
