Subways

Subways is a story of the Moloi brothers, Bonno ‘Pablo’ Moloi and Bonolo ‘Skills’ Moloi as they navigate the difficult terrain of making it into the drug trade. After the death of their parents in a horrific car crash infamously known as the flyover disaster, the two brothers get sucked into the drug underworld. The film is a collaboration between local producer Godson Tshipietsile and a host of local stars including the lead actors Lesego Madingwane, Motheo Madisha, Queen Garekwe and Bernad Morapedi who gave their all to bring the characters to life.

This is a compelling story of love, loyalty and most importantly the reoccurring theme is ‘the journey of grief’ that cuts across the four characters. Each of them has something to grief, for the Moloi brothers it is the death of their parents who died in a tragic car crash known as the flyover disaster while for the characters of Tiger and Kandy, they have to deal with the consequences of hatred, rejection and abandonment of their own parents who are still alive.

In an interview with Arts & Culture, Ranthoyakgale said he wrote the story looking at his own experiences. “During that time dagga dealing was very prevalent among the students. Often there were a lot of young boys involved with the selling and distribution of marijuana in the school and when they got caught they were expelled from school and a promising future ruined,” he recalled.

He said this compelled him to explore the drug underworld and its consequences. “The message is that drug dealing is inherently dangerous, no matter the precautions.

The risk you take, and the life you lead has no foundation or basis in reality. In the beginning of the film we meet the Moloi brothers, packaging the weed. The scene gives us a window into the story, establishing the characters, the world of the story and a hint at the conflict between the two brothers who cannot agree on how to move forward. They each have different ideas of how to improve their own lives,” he said.

Ranthoyakgale said this is a story of a man who loses everything as a result of his choices. He concluded that the film is a 1hr 20 minutes feature film and is available on Upictv.
