Brush Night with Wilson Ngoni

The event branded ‘Brush Night with Wilson Ngoni’ is billed for Gaobrone on August 13, 2022, a day before Ngoni’s birthday on August 14. The ‘Brush Night with Wilson Ngoni’ will present Ngoni as a multi-talented creative, as it comes in three elements that are Visual Art Exhibition, Music Exhibition and Live Interview. Art enthusiasts will be treated to a VVIP experience, as they will be able to view the art works of Ngoni (the visual artist) that will be displayed. For this exhibition, the largest artwork to be displayed will be a 6x1.7m piece. Attendees will also get to watch Ngoni, the music artiste and have access to two of his published books.

For the music session, Ngoni will be the main act performing with a live band supported by Brando, Cru, Que Rap, NaniB, DJ Armstrong, PeeMaster, and a live band called Kingdom Band. Another interesting part to look out for is the live interview that he will do during the exhibition. The audience will have a chance to pose questions to Ngoni during this live interview session. Guests will also have the privilege to have a signed copy of Ngoni’s book ‘Living with the Brush’. Ngoni is described as an all rounded artist who is known by many for his sharp wit for oil paintings, which most Batswana relate to. He is also described as an artist with multiple hidden talents, which include song composing, writing and a singing with a few recorded songs under his belt. Ngoni, who is a self-taught artist, has held several solo exhibitions throughout his career. “We may describe him as an underground music artiste with upholding writing skills who has two books under his belt and working on his third book.

These two books are “Doors to My Eyes, My Journey through the Corridors of Art” self-published in 2014 and Living with the Brush, which was published in 2021,” said event organiser and director of Ground Work Keoagile Bonang. Bonang said the date was proposed looking at that Ngoni’s birthday is on August 14, so it will be another way of celebrating his birthday. He also said they came up with the concept because art is about connecting with people’s emotions. It’s personal and at the same time, universal. He stated that Botswana has iconic visual artists who deserve to be celebrated for the years they have been part of the art world. According to Bonang, many artists have made an impact in the community through art and at the same time making efforts to convince the community to appreciate and understand the importance of art and the creative industry in general. “We appreciate what the music industry is doing and now we have to up our game when it comes to visual arts as it is one of the vital components when it comes to documenting our daily lives as a nation.

Therefore, we find it fitting to propose that Ground Work host a one-day solo exhibition for our very own legend and icon in visual arts Ngoni,” added. Bonang said his company has been involved in many projects geared towards promotion of the arts in the country. Such events include Roots Live Session, four-day visual arts exhibition, annual Francistown Arts Meeting that recorded a good turnover of 30 artists ranging from painting, mixed media, drawing, ceramics, photography and string art. The hosts for the Brush Night will be Brando from Yarona Fm, Loretta Mekgwe from Art Lab and Lisa Maggs from Posh & Lisa Designs.
