According to a press release from The Alliance Française Gaborone, this year’s line-up will feature some of the biggest local music stars like Rhumba icon Alfredo Mos & Les Africa Sounds alongside Kapenda Katuta, Dr Ed and his band, Mogwana Traditional Group, Hydro Molefe and Band together with Zimbabwean hip-hop artist, Josh JTG Palmer.
Fete de la Musique (World Music Day) has been celebrated since 1982 and June 21, 2022 is its 40th anniversary. The statement also explained that the festival was born to allow a greater population of musicians to express themselves and to make themselves known. It added that on June 21, music lovers and residents in France were urged to play music in their neighbourhood or in public spaces and parks where free concerts were organised to allow musicians to play and for the audience to revel.
It noted that ever since the first celebration in Paris, France in 1982, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries, Botswana inclusive.
The Alliance Française of Gaborone belongs to a worldwide non-profit network and it promotes the experience of diverse cultural activities and events through its cultural programming department. “Tickets to the festival can be collected for free at Alliance Française de Gaborone’s Facebook page in order to cater for a broader audience.
The Fondation Orange, Orange Botswana, sponsors the event, Total Energies, Veolia, Boehringer Ingelheim, AGS and the French Embassy in South Africa,” it stated.
