Shame on the Police!

According to a press statement from the police, unidentified armed men attacked on duty police officers at the station in the early hours of Tuesday.

During the attack, the suspects stole 14 riffles, five pistols and an undisclosed number of ammunition.

Although unconfirmed, it is alleged that the suspects were just carrying knives and axes, which they used to scare the men and women in uniform before they took them hostage to help themselves to the weapons.

While crime, especially armed robberies happen almost every day these days, this robbery came as a shock. It is alarming and very disturbing to say the least for the police to be held hostage, especially in their territory.

If a whole police station could be attacked and taken hostage by a handful of men, then it raises the question of public safety. The police are charged with keeping our communities safe and protecting our properties, but if they fail to secure their own, then how safe are we as the ordinary public? The police have all the resources at their disposal to avert these situations.

They have all the power and are armed with all kinds of ammunition. This is a wakeup call to those at the top to attend to this. It just cannot be business as usual after this occurrence.

With the incidents of armed robbery spiraling out of control lately, it has raised questions as to where these weapons originate from. But this current incident may raise suspicions of whether the police service is clean.

Are they not involved in all these incidents of robbery or are they not the ones actually arming these robbers? The police have made a promise to secure our lives as well as our properties, but there is no denying that at the moment, the nation is engulfed by fear.

The police have done well in the past, but this incident has exposed them badly. The police shall at all times be ready to fulfill the duty imposed upon them by law, by serving the community and protecting all the people. It must do something to redeem itself and restore public trust. A lot is at stake here especially for a police service that is ranked the best in Africa.
