The Mares are in Morocco for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals and kick off their debut campaign against Burundi tonight. WASBO, in a statement released earlier today, hit at the BFA for excluding women football leaders from the trip.
“While we are rallying behind The Mares 100percent and wishing them the best with the tournament, it will be unjust of us not to convey our disappointment in the assembled male management that has accompanied the team to Morocco without the inclusion of the capable women football managers despite the Botswana Football Association (BFA) having women in football structures and women in football leadership g and having sun the women empowerment song for some years now,” reads WASBO’s statement.
“Women empowerment seems to be used as a campaign tool while actions on the ground contradict the principles of empowerment, inclusion and equality. We call on the BFA to walk the talk and ensure that this is corrected going forward,” added Thulaganyo Retshabile, WASBO’s marketing and public relations officer. But BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo dismissed WASBO’s concerns. “(It’s an) unfortunate and reckless statement. We are a credible organization and cannot be addressed through the media.
If they ha issues, they should have personally contacted us,” Mfolo said.
