The Molepolole-based side had not announced the appointment at press time, but media reports in Zimbabwe indicated Mpofu had agreed on a one-year deal. Mpofu was yesterday pictured at the Plumtree-Ramokgwebana entry point on his way to Botswana.
“Former Highlanders coach, Mandla ‘Lulu’ Mpofu processing his travel documents at the Zimbabwe-Botswana border post on his way to Gaborone for his next job where he is set to join Premier League side Masitaoka as technical manager on a one-year deal,” state-run Chronicle reported yesterday. Mpofu was sacked by Zimbabwe giants, Highlanders in May following a poor run of form.
He holds a CAF A coaching license and was the assistant coach for the Zimbabwe national team at the 2021 AFCON finals held earlier this year. Mpofu replaces Zebras’ legend, Michael Mogaladi who left the club last week after guiding the team in just eight games in the previous season.
‘Majatlhaga’ are having a busy transfer window having parted ways with not less than 10 players while the recruitment process at the club is in full swing. Meanwhile, Oupa Kowa has parted ways with Premier League newcomers, Holy Ghost. Kowa led Holy Ghost to their maiden elite league promotion but will not oversee the team’s debut season in the Premier League.
The other coach to make a move is veteran tactician, Phillimon Makwengwe who joins fallen giants, Mochudi Centre Chiefs. Makwengwe had a stint with South African second-tier side, Black Leopards as a technical advisor and left at the end of the last season.
He recently helped save TAFIC from dropping to the regional league. Makwengwe arrives at the Riverplate ground on the back of a disappointing season for Magosi. The team came close to returning to the top league only to be dumped out by Eleven Angels in the promotional playoffs.
