Art enthusiasts were treated to a display of an array of striking artworks from the legendary painter’s catalogue and got to hear his story during a live interview with fine artist and former journalist Loretta Mekgwe.
There is no denying the talent and creative imagination that Wilson Ngoni has and that was reflected by the diversity of his artworks on display. He had pulled out paintings of different sizes, from the smallest to the biggest canvass, and the old and most recent for the followers to feast on.
The largest artwork to be displayed will be a 6x1.7m piece.
Some of his paintings that were hanged were from his first exhibition, Meleko, which he says was a launch pad of his remarkable career. On the night, in a move that left many people amazed, Ngoni also demonstrated his skills and how he goes about his business to produce his fine artworks as he painted one art live for all to see.
During a live interview, the artist also had a chance to respond to questions from the attendants. Wilson Ngoni said over the years, his art has undergone transformational change due to different motives.
He explained that most of his latest artworks are meant to celebrate the beauty of women as well as the “crunchy” side of sex. He also said artists have spiritual connect, hence they produce artworks just to live with them.
Wilson Ngoni described himself as an artist with multiple hidden talents, which include song composing, writing and a singing with a few recorded songs under his belt.
Patrons also got a chance to see Wilson Ngoni's musical side when he performed two songs to wrap up the night.
Despite the low attendance, credit must go to the organisers, Ground Work, for pulling such a massive event.
For those that attended, it was worth a while. Brush Night with Wilson Ngoni was a one-day solo exhibition to celebrate the iconic artist’s life and achievements in the industry.
The organizer, Keoagile Bonang, said the idea is to promote public art and expose local artists to the market.
