However, the main event (Fashion Week) is set to commence in May next year. In an interview with the founder and creative director of Modern Tswana Fashion Week, Nchidzi Chikumo, the main event will be hosted for seven days. He urged the public to expect a newly reformed fashion event. He said the show would have activities such as fashion show by local creative fashion designers, presentations by different speakers in the fashion industry and entertainment.
“Modern Tswana Fashion Week through its inceptions has had a warm welcome from Botswana. Despite us hosting small themed fashion events, we have never hosted the seven-day fashion week with success in the past years. We are now motivated and ready to host the seven-day fashion week. We hosted various fashion show events before and we are optimistic that the Fashion Week will be received well by the public. Most of our past events have always been well received by the public and we had an 80% ticket sale rate at all our past events,” he said.
He further pointed out that they would be having local fashion designers showcasing at the launch such as Boi’s Eleganaza Desins, Petty Designs, Sparkle Designs, ND Crotchets, Rags Designs, Rapelang Ditlhanolo and Faith Designs.
Modern Tswana has previously hosted nine fashion shows and amongst them was ‘My Fashion Night Out Fashion Show’ that he explained went very well and was highly rated in the local fashion industry. Chikumo explained that through past events, they learnt how to organise a fashion show from start to finish and how to build a perfect team that executes the fashion show. Moreover, he said as fashion events organisers and managers, they face financial challenges and finding sponsors. He therefore appealed to sponsors to help them financially saying it would help them build the fashion modeling industry, which comprises of local fashion designers, youth fashion models and many other creatives.
He, however, explained that the Botswana fashion industry was far from matching the international standards because it lacked creativity, originality and finances. “To all our followers, please know that we have never actually hosted the Modern Tswana Fashion Week, which is supposed to be a seven-day event. We have hosted themed fashion events that only take one day. We highly welcome sponsors to support our initiative through funds, services and or products. The launch event is only by invite.
No tickets are sold to attend the launch,” he explained.
