These young entrepreneurs describes themselves as perfectionists, confident, multi-taskers, go-getters and creatives. In an interview with Arts & Culture, Khumo said LAKAY Beauty Studio was established in 2019 and fully registered and incorporated in 2022. She said their beauty studio offered different services such as make-up artistry, nail care services and hairdressing. “Our mother inspired us to branch out into this industry as she is a former nail technician and helped us gain exposure by letting us practice during her time as a nail tech, and other beauty services are self taught and driven by passion. The public reacted very well and showed 100% interest in our work and believed in us to provide them with our services,” she said.

Khumo further explained that the majority of their clients were females aged between 15 and 65 years and men aged between aged between 18 and 40. She added that their targeted clients included students, working professionals, stay at home parents and any client looking for their services. She said most of their work was done at their studio that is based at home adding that they could also do house call services. She further pointed out that the best part about doing their job was challenging themselves by creating designs and styles outside their comfort zone. In addition, she said they enjoyed having a better relationship with their clients, which gives them a stress free environment and helps them to grow in the industry as they will bring in more clientele. “Some of the challenges we face as a company include no show-ups which is a drawback because they inconvenience other clients who were willing to show up, investing back into the company to push production and last but not least power cuts during sessions. Our few achievements include networking and sharing business opportunities and potential partnerships with people who are in the same industry as us and getting to be nominated by Forbes 30 under 30 Africa Summit which is happening this month. In addition, we also got to expand our business by purchasing more equipment that will sustain us for the coming years,” she said.

Furthermore, she said with their dedication and consistency, they would like to see their company branching out into other beauty services and also be one of the leading beauty companies nationally and internationally, and set goals that can create a team that is talented in the latest technologies and techniques. Khumo added that they have always had other aspiring beauticians ask them what to do saying their advice was “to start now and always remember that not everyone is going to support you and that it should not hinder you from continuing with what you love to do. Take that risk and start your business, you will never know if it is good or bad if you do not try. “As beauticians, striving for excellence is our main priority because we started off small and with nothing so pushing to be great has always been in our top list. For more information about our business we are located in Tsholofelo Gaborone, Botswana,” she ended.
