Eswatini trip: Basil Hockey Club has made its maiden trip to Eswatini

The club founder, Thoriso Bogwasi told Mmegi Sport that it was a dream come true for his side to go on tour. He said they have long held a strong interest in travelling to Eswatini and their aspirations to compete there began in 2019. “The tournament is organised by the president of Bhejane Hockey Club, Tinavo Mushavi and supported by Eswatini Hockey Association secretary-general, Prosper Sithole. This event promises to be a great platform for showcasing skills, fostering sportsmanship and promoting the growth of hockey,” he said. Bogwasi said unfortunately, due to the unprecedented impact of the global pandemic, plans were disrupted and the club was unable to participate as initially intended. However, Bogwasi said they are thrilled to share the experience this year. “Our perseverance and dedication have paid off as we have received an invitation to attend and compete in the tournament,” he said.

He added the indoor hockey festival aims to bring competition to players and teams are expected to gather today (Friday) with games starting in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Bogwasi said Basil’s participation in the Eswatini tournament brings exciting benefits. He said the plan is to perform well to attract players and boost the popularity of hockey in Botswana. “We are dedicated to nurturing young players through coaching sessions and events. Our involvement may also attract partnerships and funding from the government and private companies, helping us financially and increasing our visibility,” he said. Bogwasi said participating in the tournament means playing their best, inspiring young players and potentially securing valuable support for the club’s future. He said the tournament promises to be a highly engaging and spirited event, featuring four clubs from Eswatini, encompassing both male and female teams.

Bogwasi said the diversity of participants adds an exciting dimension to the competition, fostering friendship and creating opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual growth. Meanwhile, the Botswana Hockey Association president, Unaswi Matebu has been appointed as a member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) education committee. The overall aim of the education committee is to assist FIH in supporting member national associations with the implementation of Hockey 2024, to assist the development of the FIH hockey academy and future global development strategies.
