Addressing councillors at a full council meeting recently, Abraham highlighted it was reported that 41 cases of child abuse were being handled, including defilement, rape, and child negligence.
“Marital discord, family problems, and intimate relationship [conflict] cases are also on the rise. I plead with the public to refrain from such acts and make it a habit to report such issues to take appropriate action against the perpetrators,” he said.
“I appeal to you leaders to advocate for the rights of children and child protection in forums where you can address gatherings. Ladies and gentlemen, we currently have 11 ongoing cases of children in need of protection, which involve placement of children in places of safety away from abusers.” Abraham added this is a serious indictment on society.
He wondered what could have happened to societal values that safeguarded the well-being of children regardless of their status. Still during the council sitting but on a different matter, the mayor said they are charged with the responsibility to assist vulnerable members of the community. He said a total of 1,230 beneficiaries are registered on different social services programmes.
He pointed out that amongst these numbers, 276 are under the destitution programme, comprising 228 permanent and 53 temporary destitute persons; 246 are needy students, 110 are children in need of care, and 570 are in the Social and Community Development Department. On medicine updates in Gaborone, he said they have recently experienced a notable increase of 10% availability of drugs and medicines.
He continued: “As of the end of May 2023, the availability of vital medicines stood at 72%, representing an increase of 17% from the last report. These are potentially lifesaving medicines and are crucial in providing primary health services.” In addition, he said essential medications effective against most health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, are also available at 64%, and the necessary ones are at 36%. He also revealed that essential medicines include vitamins and Wintergreen for minor or health conditions and self-limiting conditions.
