Born Thato Modukanele, Chef Gustos leads the pack with seven nominations for this year’s edition of the YAMAS. The nominees were launched Tuesday at Molapo Showcase Piazza in Gaborone.
The talented producer/DJ is nominated for People’s Song of the Year (Away feat. Priscilla), Producer of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Male Single (Away feat Priscilla), Best Collabo (Away feat Priscilla), Best DJ and Best Amapiano (Away feat. Priscilla) awards. In an interview with Arts & Culture following the nominees' launch, the Away hitmaker said he was elated and already considers himself a winner.
“I’ve been nominated ever since the YAMAs started. I have never won any but you know when your work is being recognised on such crucial and big platforms, you are a winner already. So my longevity with the YAMAs is really inspiring because it shows that I am on the right track to greatness,” Chef Gustos said. He said the multiple nominations also mean that he is doing wonders although he is yet to reach his prime.
“So, to me, it’s so amazing and I am thankful to every heart that warms up to my craft and for the continued and undying support from Batswana. I am truly in a blessed country. But this time my domination of the awards nominees is just the Almighty flexing with me,” he said. Chef Gustossaid the year has been wonderful and said he is hopeful for more blessings in the future. Furthermore, he stated that he hopes to take home at least four awards from the seven nominations. “Winning three or four awards would be great though,” he added.
After the success of his masterpiece, Away, Chef Gustos said he is ready to dish out another massive song that will shake the music industry. He said he is already in an advanced stage with the project, which he says is close to his heart and would be the greatest reward to Batswana. “To Batswana who loves my music, I am humbled and love you beyond.
Let’s bring some of those trophies home, my people. Taking the actual award home will be a tangible certification. From my upcoming project, Batswana should expect more fire and a little bit of a different sound,” he added. Chef Gustos stated that his recent trip to London shifted his musical scope a bit, as such he intends to experiment with a couple of songs in his next project called #ExpensiveMusic. He promised his fans high-quality sound and top-notch production compared to the previous project.
