When addressing a series of kgotla meetings in Matsiloje and Matopi, Letsholathebe emphasised that drones would be a crucial tool in tackling the growing problem of illegal border crossings between the two countries. Illegal border crossings have inundated the courts with Zimbabwean nationals frequently arraigned for unlawful entry into Botswana through ungazetted points.

Letsholathebe highlighted that drone technology has been effectively used for border surveillance in developed countries for many years. As per tethered drone leading manufacturer Elistair, drones offer a continuous, wide-reaching view of border areas, enhancing security measures in these vital zones. Elistair further explained that these drones can be rapidly deployed in vulnerable areas, providing immediate situational awareness to counter criminal activities and unauthorised crossings.

The decision to employ drones was prompted by the escalating issue of illegal border crossings between Botswana and Zimbabwe, as noted by Letsholathebe. In addition to the drone initiative, he mentioned that the government has enlisted the assistance of the military to collaborate with the police in border patrol efforts, further emphasising the commitment to tackling this issue.

Letsholathebe's response was in reaction to concerns expressed by Kgosi Tshimologo Toteng and Kgosi Eric Moipolai of Matsiloje regarding the escalating problem of illegal border crossings between Botswana and Zimbabwe. Both village leaders highlighted that a significant number of Zimbabweans involved in illegal gold mining in Matsiloje and neighbouring settlements had unlawfully crossed the border. Kgosi Toteng also brought to the MP’s attention the increasing unauthorised movement of individuals from Zimbabwe who come to Botswana to engage in illegal gold mining in the Matsiloje region.
