On Saturday, Hogs 1 entertained Canon Jaguars in the men’s final winning the encounter 19-10. They scored five tries while Jaguars, who were the organisers of the tournament only scored two tries. Seven men’s teams (Hogs 1 and 2, BDF Cheetahs, Jaguars, UB Rhinos, Jwaneng, and BUIST) and six women teams participated in the tournament. The second position was scooped by Hogs 2 after beating cross town rivals, Cheetahs 19-12. The women’s champions are UB Rhinos.
The tournament organiser who is Jaguars chairperson, Dr Feddious Mutenheri told Sport Monitor that the tournament was a success considering the number of teams that competed. “We had a good day of rugby despite the morning disruption due to the initial venue being double booked. We ended up relocating the tournament to Hogs ground.
Well, one can say Hogs was a better side on the day, which is true. Hogs is a good side especially in the Sevens version of the game where they now have all The Spartans players who we know are a professional Sevens side in Zimbabwe. They are a formidable side,” he said. Regarding the performance of Jaguars in the final, Mutenheri said it is always exciting when the two sides meet in the finals. He said Jaguars came into the tournament with a lot of injuries, as most of the Sevens’ players were out. Meanwhile, Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) development manager, Zee Khumalo said Sevens tournaments are hosted by different clubs (five) every weekend.
The first edition was hosted by Cheetahs followed by Jaguars and this coming weekend the host is Rhinos followed by BIUST and the last tournament will be hosted by Hogs. Khumalo said the aim of the Sevens’ tournaments is to conclude the season, scout for new talent that can be included in the national Sevens’ team.
