This caution comes in the wake of a recent police breakthrough, which led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Tumasera.
The suspect was found in possession of a catalytic converter and what appeared to be tools used for breaking into vehicles during a stop, question, and search operation conducted on a Thursday night.
Serowe Police Station commander, Superintendent Poloko Oteng expressed concern over this troubling trend. Criminals have been removing catalytic converters from vehicles while their owners are asleep.
Oteng indicated that they suspect the arrested individual might be linked to a syndicate that has been plaguing Serowe, targeting catalytic converters in people's vehicles during the night while the owners are unaware. 'He was arrested in possession of a catalyst that he failed to account for. Through our preliminary investigations, we have since established that it was stolen from a combi in Serowe and we are yet to establish his market and if he is linked to the previous cases,' the station head told The Monitor.
'We have received several reports from people who have been driving their vehicles for a while without noticing that their catalytic converters have been sawed out without their consent.'
