His sacking comes just weeks after the association dismissed Mogomotsi Mpote from his role as Zebras coach.

Officials at Lekidi were not available for comment but Saulos confirmed that his stint as Mares coach has come to an abrupt end.

“ I have not received formal communication that I am no longer the Mares coach. However, the technical director called me in the morning and told me that my services are no longer needed,” said Saulos.

The former TAFIC coach said that he was supposed to travel to Gaborone today to start preparations for the WAFCON 2024 qualifying clash against Kenya. He further stated that he is still not privy to reasons for his dismissal. There are reports that some of the statements he uttered in the media might have rubbed authorities at Lekidi the wrong way.

Saulos started his reign as Mares coach on a high note in September. He led the team to a commanding 4-1 victory away to Gabon in the first of the leg of the preliminary round of the WAFCON 2024 qualifiers.

The two-legged tie concluded with a resounding 6-0 victory for the Mares at Lobatse Sports Complex. Saulos’ charges then failed to progress to the semi-finals of the COSAFA cup at the expense of Zimbabwe after recording two draws and a win. Mohambi’s most poor showing was when his team was eliminated by Tanzania from the 2024 Olympic Qualifiers after a 3-0 aggregate loss.

Sources at Lekidi have indicated that Alex Malete will be part of an interim technical team set up as an assistant coach along with another female coach whose names are yet to be disclosed. The name of the interim head coach also remain unknown although he is said to be an employee of the BFA under the technical department.
