Addressing the meeting, the BVF president, Tsoseletso Magang, said volleyball should always be united because that is the role of sport as it unites people.
She said the congress was meant to discuss issues that concern the running of volleyball, issues that concern the improvement of the running of volleyball and the performance of the administrators of volleyball.
“Let me remind you that the performance is not only on the field of play, we are judged by that performance by the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) when it comes to funding.
We are currently in tier one, although it does not have a lot of money. Some of the things that we do, like failing to comply, does not only affect the sport itself but how BNSC looks at us. It also makes it difficult for us to try and motivate for us to be kept in tier one with improved funding,” she said.
Magang also said funding is a challenge for volleyball, but with Beach Volleyball doing very well, being Zone VI champions, both men and women, that adds points for the Federation when it comes to the BNSC grant allocation. She said also winning a medal at the African Games is another positive for the Federation.
She said there should be safe guarding in the sport, and she cannot deny that sport has lost many athletes because they fail to create safe spaces. She said affiliates are blaming the executive committee for poor communication but the same thing goes both ways because affiliates have not shared their list of new office bearers. She said the only clubs that have shared their lists are BDF VI, Dynamites, MagStimela, Kalavango, Sebokeng, Blockbusters, Motlakase and Kutlwano with its interim committee. On other matters, Magang called upon the affiliates to continue growing clubs across the country.
She said there has been clubs in other areas of the country that did not survive and they need support. Magang said the executive committee is empowered by the constitution to appoint people to fill up vacant positions in the committee and for the congress to endorse them. Three people who were co-opted in the executive committee being Seabo Kgwadi (Additional Member), Robin Seleka (Marketing and Media relations) and Pogiso Osupile (Beach Volleyball). The congress adopted the financial report and also went on to agree that the volleyball league should start in the last weekend of May.
Meanwhile, Botswana will host the Zone VI club championships this December in Gaborone. Magang said they have set up a Local Organising Committee (LOC), although it is not yet complete. She said the Zone has agreed to suspend Zone VI national teams championships due to financial challenges.
