CELEBRATION CUT SHORT: Botswana's sprint sensation, Letsile Tebogo received the sad news of his mother's passing yesterday

Tebogo had claimed silver at the Los Angeles Grand Prix on Saturday. Later on that day he bagged two awards at the Botswana Sports Awards held at Royal Aria Convention Centre. The sprinter walked away with the most prestigious award, Sportsperson of the Year as well as the Sportsman of the Year award. However his celebrations were cut short when he received the devastating news of his mother's passing yesterday. Tebogo has been hoisting the Botswana flag internationally and is among the hottest prospects in World athletics today. He won the silver and bronze medals in 100m and 200m respectively at last year's World Athletics Championships.

Meanwhile, Oratile Rose Nowe was named the Sportswoman of the Year while Kebonyemodisa Dose Mosimanyane was recognized as Coach of the Year. Thuso Malasa was named Sportsman of the Year with Disability, while Onalethata Onneng clinched Sportswoman of the Year with Disability award. The young sports persons were also recognised on the night and Busang Kebinatshipi stood out as the Junior Sportsman of the Year. Natalie Katlo Banda, who has excelled in chess, scooped the Junior Sportswoman of the Year award.

The Lawn Bowls Women's national team was honored as Team of the Year. The Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, Tumiso Rakgare bestowed three special awards on individuals and teams that he says stood out for their outstanding performances. The First award went to Botswana national football team player, Tumisang Orebonye. Rakgare commended Orebonye for his exceptional contributions to the sport, highlighting his continued success in the esteemed North African top leagues. 'Tumisang Orebonye made history as the first player from his country to win the continental cup in football. He is now leaving his mark in the top leagues of North Africa, showing his skills and making his country proud,' affirmed Rakgare.

Botswana women's national football team, affectionately called The Mares, also received special praise from Rakgare for their determination and fair play. 'This is an extraordinary group of women who defied stereotypes and embraced football, a sport traditionally dominated by men. Despite facing numerous challenges and competing in a league with limited resources, The Mares, demonstrated unwavering commitment and resilience. Their determination led them to qualify for continental competitions, showcasing the power of teamwork and perseverance,' said Rakgare.

The third award was presented to Ross Branch, who etched his name in Botswana's sporting history by becoming the first Motswana to triumph in the grueling Dakar Rally. Branch expressed gratitude for the support he received and pledged to continue representing his country with pride on the global stage. 'Representing my country on the global stage means everything to me, and I promise to keep doing it with pride. I am grateful for all the encouragement and love I received from my fellow Batswana. This achievement belongs to all of us, and I hope it inspires others to follow their dreams. Thank you for believing in me,' said Branch.

The event, aimed at recognising and honouring those who have excelled in various sporting endeavors throughout the year, was hosted by the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).

During his address at the ceremony, President Mokgweetsi Masisi encouraged athletes to aim high and continue striving for excellence. He emphasised the importance of defying expectations and contributing positively to Botswana's sporting legacy. 'In our journey of sports, let us always reach for the stars. Keep pushing boundaries, defy expectations, and make Botswana proud. Your dedication and excellence shape our sporting legacy and inspire future generations,' Masisi said.
