Beneath the surface

Muscles flexing, he instinctively reached for the familiar handle. As his fingers curled around the smooth metal, its energy surged through him, fuelling the storm within his powerful frame. The blade’s steely glint momentarily startled him, but this was his life. His body, honed by countless battles, instinctively calmed as he lifted his sword, ready to face the darkness once more.

He walked slowly along the familiar path, the echo of his footsteps reflecting against the stone-lined tunnel walls. Cool air wrapped around him, carrying a distinctive scent. He inhaled deeply, a thoughtful smile playing on his lips as he identified the aroma. It wasn’t just the smell of fear and uncertainty; it was the unmistakable scent of danger, lingering like a silent warning, and it thrilled him to his core. He blinked as he stepped into the blinding light. The heat struck his cool skin, and the deafening roar of thousands assaulted his ears. Were they cheering for him or merely bracing for the spectacle to follow? He scanned the arena and easily spotted his adversary. Their eyes met, but there was no acknowledgment. They slipped their iron helmets over their faces, each hoping to see another sunrise and revel once more in the presence of their loved ones.

They were gladiators in Ancient Rome. For them, danger did not lurk behind corners; it permeated the air and surrounded their lives. Every breath could be their last. Danger embodies the unpredictable forces that challenge human foresight and resilience. It manifests in various forms, from natural disasters to human conflicts, each testing the boundaries of preparedness and adaptation. It sparks critical thinking and innovation, compelling societies to evolve and fortify against potential threats. Mitigating danger demands a blend of not only vigilance, but scientific inquiry, and strategic planning as well. As an ever-present catalyst for progress, it urges us to confront and overcome our vulnerabilities, pushing the boundaries of what we can endure and achieve.

While danger can be glaringly obvious, as it was for the gladiators, it often remains hidden, catching us unaware of what lies ahead. Let us pause and shift our gaze from Ancient Rome to present-day Italy. Naples, a city where history and modernity embrace in vibrant harmony, captivates the senses at every turn. Sunlight glistens off the azure Bay of Naples, while Vesuvius looms, a silent protector of ancient stories. Cobblestone streets wind through bustling markets, where the aroma of freshly baked pizza mingles with the salty sea breeze. Colourful buildings and historic churches hint of a rich past. A colossal mural of Diego Maradona adorns a Naples building, his fierce gaze immortalised in vivid colours. His outstretched arms exude defiance and triumph, embodying the city’s passionate spirit. Beneath, the vibrancy of Neapolitan life pulses, a testament to their eternal hero.

And yet beneath this striking city, could hidden danger be lurking? The city of Naples sits precariously atop one of the world’s most geologically active regions. Beneath its historic streets and vibrant neighborhoods lies the Campi Flegrei, an expansive and volatile caldera (a volcanic crater that forms after a volcano erupts and collapses) system. Unlike the more famous Mount Vesuvius, which looms to the east, the Campi Flegrei is a series of interconnected volcanic features, including craters, fumaroles, and hot springs, stretching across the western part of the metropolitan area.

Unlike Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei lacks a visible cone, often going unnoticed in daily life. Yet, with so many people living above it, it is considered one of the most dangerous volcanic areas in Europe. An eruption 39, 000 years ago was so massive that its material reached as far as Siberia. In recent years, tremors caused by shifting magma and gases have been frequently felt across Naples. On May 20, 2024, the area experienced 160 earthquakes, including one with a magnitude of 4.4, the strongest to hit the region in 40 years. While scientists cannot predict the exact moment Campi Flegrei might erupt, one indisputable truth persists: Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius, and all the volcanoes in this region follow their own enigmatic timelines. The next catastrophic event could strike tomorrow, decades from now, or even centuries in the future. Yet, one certainty remains; the relentless march toward that day is inevitable. And yet once again, we find ourselves truly at nature’s mercy.
