Lunga to host solo exhibition in Maun

In an interview with Arts&Culture, Lunga said the upcoming exhibition titled ‘See why I saw’ is about appreciating the people he has crossed paths with and the places he travelled to. Lunga, who is based in Gaborone, said this is a celebration of their inspiration on him. He explained that being an artist is a journey of discovery, explaining that sometimes he encountered challenges such as late payment and lack of places to host exhibitions. He said they did not have proper galleries. He also stated that he managed to build clientele people who collected his art annually both locally and internationally.

“I do contemporary art, which includes painting and drawing. I am inspired by nature, culture, and stories of people I know and strangers. I was born an artist, so there was no way I could deny my calling of being an artist. Just like ngaka ya setso (traditional healer), this is a calling you do not choose but you are born with it. The public has been appreciating my art in the past two years compared to the time when I started this artistic journey,” he said. He further pointed out that in the past, he hosted multiple solo exhibitions. He also said he was hoping to own an art studio in the future where he could be able to host workshops with his fellow artists to discuss the life of an artist. He advised upcoming artists to explore and discover things. He explained that artists are naturally creative and as such need to step out of normality. “It is okay to step out of their comfort zones, figure things out, explore and be adventurous,” he said.
