Personal adornments such as brooches, rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and cufflinks, always give people not only a good look but also confidence. Local jewellers, KWA, are a re-launched local accessories brand that has explored artistic experimentation over the course of seven years. KWA, meaning 'over there' in Setswana, reflects the brand's vision to transport wearers to a realm of creativity and cultural exploration. According to KWA creative director, Nthabiseng Faith, their Afro-centric Summer Collection was made from tarnish resistant craft wire which they offered in gold and silver. She said whereas their Ebony Collection was made from a variety of wooden bead pieces, what makes theirs unique is their experimental, sustainable and handmade approach.

“We incorporate Afro-centric silhouettes, contemporary artistry, a sense of everyday comfort and modern designs using distinctive accents of indigenous beads, seedpods, baubles, pearls, and cowrie shells. We make pieces for individuals that seek to make a statement with their jewellery while exploring their cultural roots and self-expression. We firmly believe in the power of elevating our heritage and embracing individuality through our pieces,” she said. Furthermore, Faith pointed out that the response from the public has been quite heart warming and rewarding. She said they have been able to attract and build a community that is supportive and open-minded about their experimental releases. Since launching, she explained that they have been able to sell out on their Afro-centric Summer Collection twice. She said to date, they continue to gradually and steadily make sales, with some pieces selling more easily and faster than others, of course.

“Batswana are vibrant and unique and have been very open to exploring and experimenting with the way they present themselves - we love to see it! We have occasionally made international sales. We are able to attract international buyers and audiences due to the power of social media. We have been able to brand ourselves strongly and consistently with quality curated campaigns that leave a long-lasting impression on viewers,” she said. Faith also said they received wonderful and positive feedback. She added that their jewellery craftsmanship, personalised packaging and service provision tend to really resonate well with most buyers. Her advice to aspiring jewellers and artists that is that they must find and follow their individuality. She said creativity blossoms naturally with strong roots.
