GU make history with DTCB Women’s Championship win

The Reds were just promoted into the Gaborone Region Women’s Division 1 League two seasons ago. They ascended to halt Double Action's dominance in the competition. GU had walked over Makgabz City with a 25-0 win in the semi final played on Friday afternoon. The team recorded the biggest win in the championship in the semi final and went on to win the highest scoring final on Saturday afternoon. As early as the 10th minute, Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse found Keitumetse Dithebe in space but the forward saw her shot parried away for a corner. A minute later from the corner kick, Ontlametse shot over the bar. The Reds Ladies finally broke the deadlock when Ontlametse beat the offside trap and beat the goalkeeper to the bottom corner on the 17th minute. The forward bagged a brace on the 38th minute as she headed in Dithebe's corner kick.

Ontlametse completed her hat trick two minutes before half time to give GU a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break. Top Girls were handed a lifeline when Thero Ndara reduced the deficit from the spot just nine minutes into the second half. Top Girls were rocked by an injury as goalkeeper, Constance Mashabela, was stretchered off and in her place came Malebogo Bakwadi on the hour mark. Atang Busang increased GU's lead on the 74th minute after she broke with pace and beat the goalkeeper with a powerful effort. It was 5-1 on the 80th minute with Tlamelo Pheresi converting from the spot for GU. Three minutes later, Ontlametse scored her fourth of the night and extended GU's lead. The forward proved to be a tougher assignment for Top Girls' defence as she netted her fifth of the match and GU's seventh on the 89th minute. Laone Moloi completed the rout with a goal on the second minute of the referee’s additional time. GU have also booked a place in the COSAFA qualifiers for the CAF Women's Champions League to be played later this year. 'The game did not flow as we expected because the other team had their own tactical approach. I think it was delaying tactics because every time the goalkeeper was sitting down every time we attacked and when we had the moment, the goalkeeper was sitting down. It is how they wanted to play and my girls were getting frustrated but at half time I talked to them and told them that we do not need to score 20 goals to win this cup and we are leading so why should we rush,' GU head coach, William 'Raizor' Monene said after the match.
