Liquid Botswana boosts coding in schools
ODIRILE TAMAJOBE | Tuesday August 6, 2024 08:43
As Liquid Botswana, we have partnered CSEd and together, we implemented computer science education through the annual Hour of Code event. Through this partnership, we provided coding training and exposure to Botswana government schools and were supported by the University of Botswana.
This partnership, along with others such as Raspberry Pi Foundation, Code.org, and Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB), sought to raise awareness about coding and foster inclusivity. Notably, as the Managing Director of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Botswana, I was appointed to the Board of Directors for CSEd Botswana, further emphasising the strategic importance of this initiative.
Why Liquid Intelligent Technologies has entered this partnership
The Computer Science Education (CSEd) Botswana is an initiative in Botswana that focuses on promoting and implementing computer science education in schools. The goal of CSEd Botswana is to make computer science a fundamental part of the education system in Botswana schools by promoting diversity, enhancing curricula, supporting teacher development, and advocating for ICT infrastructure in schools. It is supported by the University of Botswana and aims to collaborate with both local and international stakeholders to bring computer science education expertise and funding to Botswana.
The partnership aligns perfectly with Liquid's vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no African behind. Liquid’s commitment is to bridge the digital divide and contribute to the socio-economic development of the regions it operates in. We believe in leveraging technology to drive positive change and empower communities and through partnerships such as the one with CSEd. We are enabling digital access, fostering a culture of innovation and technological literacy. Additionally, we are supporting this initiative because it also aligns with the government's digitisation strategy and President Masisi's Reset Agenda, aiming to provide every Botswana student with essential computer science skills.
What has been achieved in the partnership? We have upskilled 10,000 students in 200 schools through the Hour of Code event earlier this year in March. These students were equipped with fundamental coding and computational thinking skills, enabling them to thrive in the digital era. Our long-term vision is to see increased interest and participation in STEM subjects, improved academic performance, and a more technologically adept workforce.
Training students on the Hour of Code
The training of schools on the Hour of Code has made a significant contribution to Botswana's long-term digital transformation goals as it aligns perfectly with the government's vision to build a digitally empowered citizenry. By equipping students with essential digital skills, we are preparing them for the jobs of the future and nurturing a generation of innovators and problem solvers. This investment in human capital supports Botswana's vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, our partnership demonstrates the commitment of Liquid Botswana to the country's development, fostering a collaborative ecosystem that drives sustainable growth and prosperity.
We firmly believe in giving back to the communities we serve, and this partnership allows us to make a tangible impact on education and digital inclusion. By supporting the CSEd initiative, we contribute to the development of digital skills, empower educators, and ultimately hope to inspire students. This goes back to fulfilling our CSR goals of fostering sustainable development. As part of our CSR efforts also under the education pillar, we recently partnered with another organisation for a Cybersmart Student Champions Programme in which we are training over 50,000 students in cyber security in line with the government's digitalisation efforts. We are proud to play a role in Botswana's digital transformation journey.
CSEd and cybersecurity
While the primary focus may be computer science education, integrating elements of cyber security education and awareness is crucial in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat cyber-attacks. People are the first line of defence against attacks, be it in the professional or personal space. Therefore embarking on cyber security education at a young age will help ensure we have a more secure and conscious workforce of the future to serve as the human firewall. The CSEd will benefit from Liquid’s expertise in cyber security as we aim to incorporate elements of digital literacy and responsible use of technology whenever we get a chance to interact with scholars. . The University of Botswana plays a crucial role in supporting the CSEd initiative. The university contributes its expertise and resources to ensure the effective implementation of the training programmes. They provide guidance on curriculum development, teacher training, and overall programme management, leveraging their academic prowess and experience. Collaboration with the tertiary institution strengthens the quality and credibility of the initiative while fostering a strong academia-industry partnership.
I believe my appointment to the CSEd Board solidifies the partnership and enhances its impact on digital education in Botswana. As a Board member, I am confident that I will bring in valuable insights, industry expertise, and a deep understanding of the local context. This direct involvement from Liquid Botswana's leadership ensures effective collaboration, strategic decision-making, and alignment with the company's vision. My presence on the Board also facilitates close coordination between Liquid Botswana and CSEd, enabling swift implementation of initiatives and a more efficient utilisation of resources. This appointment signifies Liquid Botswana's commitment to the success of the partnership and its dedication to driving positive change in Botswana's digital education landscape.
