DJ Missy makes her mark

DJ Missy began her career in 2013 as a commercial and soul DJ. She considers herself as one of the pioneers of female DJs in the country. She plays a blend of deep house, inspirational, and passionate music that soothes and calms music enthusiasts. DJ Missy told Arts&Culture that it has not been easy for female DJs to break into the male-dominated industry over the past years. She said that to be a successful DJ, one must be focused, grounded, persistent, hard-working and determined. She also indicated that she continuously receives respect from her male peers because of the same traits. “I consider myself fortunate to be surrounded by my industry brothers who kindly support me,” said DJ Missy.
According to the gifted DJ, she always makes it a point to show up for every booking that she gets. Furthermore, she stated that as long as there is a contract, she has no say in which bookings to accept or reject. She said the main objective is to use her sets for various genres to make everyone happy regardless of age. She stated that she gets her inspiration from two female South African DJ’S; Lamiez Holworthy and Zinhle to keep going. DJ Missy delivered the dopest set at The Day Club, Pretty Girls Love Good Music and Toropo Ya Muka (TYM). Unlike before, she said she has been getting bookings to play at some of the biggest festivals around and across the borders. “In the past, I would just be booked to DJ at weddings and corporate functions in Francistown, but this year is different and it is good to be recognised and appreciated by my hometown,” she added.
Additionally, she stated that she was able to pursue her dream of becoming a DJ because of the help and encouragement from her friends and family. Over the years, she has also trained and groomed a few female DJs in the area. Aside from being a DJ, the talented entertainer said that she is continuously exploring new ventures such as providing sound during events, selling bedding online and also owns a clothing brand called Drip Ghetto. Drip Ghetto offers a variety of clothing items from t-shirts, sweaters to mention but a few. She encouraged women to follow their dreams and work hard for what they want in life. “Please do not let the fact that there are more men in the industry you wish to pursue deter you. Allow your talent to do the talking for you. Never give up on your goals due to what other people may think of you,” she advised other women.
