The Zumba music artist, well-known for his classic songs such as Amadamara, will share the stage with a local iconic traditional music group, Matsieng. Freddy Gwala, a self-proclaimed Afrop-Pop music pioneer was a popular figure in the early 90s. Over the years, his music transcended African and European borders. With about 18 albums under his belt, the iconic musician has been in high demand in recent times after featuring in a song called Ok’salayo by Lindough. The song has been making waves since its release a year ago. Event organiser, Lecco Kenosi, told Arts&Culture that the decision to bring Freddy Gwala was due to his high demand. “People asked for Freddy and that’s why we are bringing him.

We bring artists according to people’s demands. Freddy Gwala is a legendary figure in the music industry, especially his unique style and contribution to the Kwaito genre. His music resonates with a broad audience and brings a sense of nostalgia. By featuring him, we aim to celebrate his legacy and offer fans a chance to experience his captivating performances live,” Kenosi said. “I have also added Matsieng because I wanted to cater for everyone. Matsieng is a powerhouse of traditional music. Tinto was big as you know we don’t have many legends in our country, we will keep bringing the once popular groups to remind people of these people who made our childhoods memorable,” said Kenosi.

Kenosi explained that the Legends in Concert is about memories and bringing that nostalgic experience for the older generations. Furthermore, he said although he appreciates calls from some of his patrons to do live shows, the idea is on the radar. He said they are exploring ways to incorporate live elements into the concert to make it more dynamic and enjoyable. However, he said they are committed to delivering a top-notch event that exceeds expectations. “It’s not basically about performance because most of the artists we bring are not active anymore. 'So, we are giving people their idols and want them to have a good time and meet old friends in a nice environment, so both Matsieng and Freddy Gwala fit perfectly in this concert.

Sometimes we spice it up by adding people who are not legends in the line-up but play music which suits our audience,” he added. Kenosi promised the Legends in Concert patrons a memorable show. He explained that the idea behind bringing Matsieng and Freddy Gwala together is to bridge the generations and musical styles, creating a diverse and enriching experience for the audience. “This blend of different genres and eras not only showcases the richness of our musical heritage but also appeals to a wider range of fans, offering something for everyone to enjoy,” he explained. Besides Freddy Gwala and Matsieng, the show will also feature DJ Zaskay and DJ Geespeezy on the decks. Former Davet Crew member, Letso ‘Omtaka’ Mafoko will be the event MC.
