Mmasekgethu told this publication that Ntwa Ya Puo was all about showcasing traditional poetry. He further explained that even though it was called Ntwa Ya Puo, it was not a competition but rather a showcase of traditional poetry and the rich Setswana language. He added that together with Serurubele, they decided to promote Setswana poetry and also bring about a big Setswana festival in the South just like Poetvango hosted in Okavango. He said the event came about after realising that traditional poetry poets did not have enough platforms to showcase their talent. He said the event would help them get exposure and shine.
He also said the event will unearth hidden talent as there were many local traditional poets who never shared their talents in platforms such as the National Art Festival events. He added that most of those poets were elders. He said they saw the need to create a platform where they could promote and showcase their talent both locally and internationally. “This will be Ntwa Ya Puo third season. The first season was held in 2019 and the second in 2022. It will start at 5pm and end at 8pm. Our target audience is people who love poetry, Setswana and entertainment. Actually, we encourage Batswana more especially those who love Setswana culture and language at large to attend the event.
Our performers include myself, Serurubele, Moroka Moreri, Kaone Mahuma, Modubathankga, Poetic Blood, Phakwe, Mmangwaoya Setswana, Skhutlhwana sa Bannye, DJ Tshokz and our MC will be Dops Baipidi,” he said. Mmasekgethu added that they picked the above mentioned poets because they believed they were very talented and knowledgeable of the Setswana language. He said they were not only focused on poets but also those who are dedicated in preserving Setswana culture like writers, singers and others. He added that some of the performers had good international experience, some doctors and renowned authors. He also said they would like to expand the event by hosting it at different parts of the country.
He said they realised that the public likes Setswana language and culture. He also pointed out that they want to preserve traditional poetry by attracting and teaching children Setswana poetry. Mmasekgethu also said the security would be tight and therefore people’s properties would be safe. Speaking of the challenges they face, he said it was lack of funds. He urged the public to come in large numbers and encouraged them to support local poets. Entrance fee is P100 standard, P200 VIP and P50 for children.
