The UDC became the first party to launch a manifesto this year, although it has been relatively quiet in the political scene as the country approaches the October general election. At the manifesto launch over the weekend, UDC president Duma Boko also introduced and presented all parliamentary candidates to the members. The event was undeniably impactful, as members painted Tlokweng in royal blue. It was also during the launch that the coalition leadership officially announced the opening of their campaign season and the commencement of candidate launches.
The event was attended by all the candidates, members from across the country and some leaders and supporters from the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF). Despite recent challenges, including defections, it seems the UDC remains united. When delivering his speech, coalition chairperson Motlatsi Molapise reaffirmed his support for Boko. 'Boko remains the UDC president. I have confidence in him despite what others may think. You don't have to like him—he has faults like everyone else because he is human. But I trust his leadership, along with his vice, Ndaba Gaolathe. 'I urge members to stop paying attention to petty issues or gossip about their leaders. Stand with them when they are under attack and defend them,' Molapise said.
He further stated that leaders often come under fire when followers fail to defend them, emphasizing that that UDC leaders need the support of their members to effectively deliver on the party's promises. Despite recent challenges, Molapise noted that the UDC has managed to field credible candidates. He stressed the importance of hard work, saying that they must be diligent in serving the areas assigned to them by the UDC. He cautioned against expecting miracles, noting that victory is impossible without effort. Molapise reiterated that hard work pays off and that the UDC needs candidates who are determined and capable of winning in every area the party targets. On other issues, Molapise implored members to be united and to support each other in their areas. He said members must end conflict in areas that are not given to them and should respect the decisions made by their leaders in those areas.
