Botswana Power Corporation (BPC)

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is delighted to announce a momentous development in the nation’s journey towards energy security and sustainability. They have officially signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with China Harbor Engineering Consortium for the construction of a 100MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Jwaneng. This pivotal project is a significant milestone in their efforts to diversify Botswana’s energy sources, reduce carbon emissions, and build a resilient energy future.

Project Overview:

• Alignment with National Energy Goals: The Jwaneng Solar PV Plant is one of two utility-scale solar projects initiated as part of Botswana’s Integrated Resource Plan. This plan aims to secure 200MW of renewable energy by 2030, with the broader goal of achieving 50% renewable energy in the national mix by 2036.

• Reducing Carbon Footprint: As a nation, we recognize the critical need to address climate change. This solar PV plant will play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly as the energy sector currently accounts for over 80% of Botswana’s total emissions.

• Strategic International Partnership: The project underscores BPC’s commitment to international collaboration. Awarded through a competitive tender process, the partnership with China Harbor Engineering Consortium ensures the application of world-class expertise in renewable energy development.

Leadership Insights:

During the signing ceremony, President Mokgweetsi Masisi reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to a sustainable energy future, stating, “Our journey towards energy security and transition has begun in earnest and is unstoppable. This project marks another significant milestone in our national development commitments.”

David Kgoboko, CEO of BPC, highlighted the significance of this initiative, saying, “The Jwaneng Solar PV Plant is a critical step in their strategy to reduce carbon emissions and solidify our commitment to a greener future. It represents our dedication to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all Batswana.”

Looking Ahead:

The Jwaneng Solar PV Plant is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026, significantly reducing Botswana’s reliance on daytime power imports. As they progress, Botswana Power Corporation will continue to lead the charge towards a sustainable energy future, ensuring that every step they take today lights the path for generations to come.
