Hoffmann wins veteran 120km cycling race

The event, which was held over the weekend, attracted multitudes of cyclists from across Botswana and neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Hoffmann won position one in the 120km veteran cycling race followed by local cyclist, Lebonetse Mongwe of Stanbic bank who secured the second position.

Under the 120km Elite category, Matlhogonolo Botlhale of Jonmol Club took position one followed by Lloyd Molale of Team Swift.

Furthermore, the Under-23 male 120km race was won by Gomolemo Kealotswe of Team Swift with Thebeyame Ruele securing the second position.

Meanwhile, the female category did not have the 120km race but participated mostly in the 90km and 60km races.

Kutlo Majaha of Tsela Riders took position one in the Master’s category where Team Swift dominated the veteran 90km race. Wyanie Odisang and Keletso Gareebiwe both from Team Swift took position one and two respectively for the veteran 90km race.

Under the female elite race, Nonofo Maswabe of Jwaneng Cycling Club took the first spot followed by Moratiwa Matlhaope of Tsela Riders.

When giving a keynote address, Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) managing director, Sedireng Serumola, and also the chief cyclist of the charity cycling challenge, said the partnership in the cycling event is a testament to their shared values and commitment to making a lasting impact.

'Morupule Cycling Club has played an instrumental role in promoting cycling as a sport in the region,' he added.

Serumola acknowledged that the cycling race has grown leaps and bounds, now attracting athletes from beyond the borders and significantly contributing to the growth of sport tourism in Botswana.

'It is particularly gratifying to know that we have participants from Zimbabwe and South Africa joining us today, a testament to the race's rising stature and appeal,” he added.

Serumola expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the cyclists and thanked them for their continued participation. Additionally, he said the cyclists presence enriches the sport of the challenge and strengthens the bonds of friendship and sportsmanship across borders.

He said the club is more than just a gathering of cycling enthusiasts; it is a vibrant community that embodies the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and dedication.

Serumola further stated that this year's Morupule Coal Mine CEO's Charity Cycle Challenge has been one of the best-registered races in recent years, a clear testament to its growing popularity and significance.

The 2024 Morupules CEOs annual charity cycling challenge attracted 206 cyclist including 33 female contenders.

The 120km Elite and Under 23 male winners walked away with P7500.

Hoffman who scooped the first position during the Veteran 120km challenge cashed out P4000 with the runner up being rewarded withP3000.

Hoffman has previously won the Mascom cycling challenge in 2018 and the MCM cycling challenge in 2019.

They were also 44 women and 39 men who registered to participate in the walk which was part of the activities during the massive cycling event.

The platinum sponsor Stanbic pledged P250,000 as part of their three-year partnership and sponsorship.

Additionally Stanbic Bank also contributed close to P 55,000 to organising the challenge's activities.

DTCB also contributed about P50,000 to make the cycling challenge a success.
