The event will be held under the theme, ‘Know Your Roots’, which the organisers say is not just a reminder but a call to action for the youth of Botswana to reconnect with their cultural heritage. According to the Director of Miss Independence Botswana, Gao Phuti, the theme serves as both a “reminder and homework for the youth generation to learn, practice, and embrace their sense of identity.” Phuti explained that the event aims to promote culture and diversity, providing contestants with the opportunity to market and showcase Botswana’s rich cultural tapestry. “The fashion show isn’t just about clothing; it’s a celebration of culture, an opportunity for personal growth, and a platform for women to gain confidence, learn, and express themselves creatively,” she said. The event is expected to be an exquisite and life-changing event, offering a space for socialising and networking.

Phuti said designers have volunteered their services, and auditions were held to select the models who will grace the runway dressed in designer bikinis, showcasing a blend of tradition and modernity. Phuti emphasised the importance of the fashion show in promoting cultural pride. “By showcasing traditional Botswana attire, participants promote cultural pride and help preserve and showcase Botswana’s unique fashion heritage,” she noted. She added that the event also blends traditional and contemporary fashion, showing how modern Batswana women can honour their roots while embracing global trends. This fusion, Phuti believes, bridges the gap between culture and technological advancements, ensuring that both co-exist harmoniously. The empowerment of young women is another key aspect of the Miss Independence Botswana fashion show. Phuti highlighted that the introduction parade, where contestants introduce themselves, serves as a platform for self-expression. “The fashion show gives participants a platform to showcase their unique styles, helping them develop self-confidence,” she said.

Moreover, it opens doors to professional opportunities in modelling, fashion design, and related fields, providing valuable exposure, experience, and networking opportunities. In addition to empowerment, the fashion show offers an educational component as contestants gain insights into the fashion industry, learn how to present themselves, work with designers, and understand the importance of fashion as a form of communication and cultural expression. Phuti believes that the knowledge gained empowers and could inspire further interest in the field. “The community’s support for the Miss Independence Botswana events has been overwhelming. I want to express gratitude to the volunteers from various departments, such as make-up artists, designers, and photographers, who have come forward to sponsor the event. We also, as the Miss Independence Botswana, can recognise and feel the love,” she added.

She anticipates a powerful display of cultural heritage that has rich cultural representation packaged in it as well as authentic storytelling through fashion. She said the fashion show will leave a lasting impact not just on the participants but on the community as a whole, inspiring young women across Botswana to embrace their culture and pursue their dreams. However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Phuti laments the struggle to secure sponsorship, noting that they have had to finance the event from their own pockets. “It is very disheartening that we have to do it all by ourselves because it dims our determination for the goal we want to achieve,” she said. She appealed for financial support to cover the event’s expenses and to support the queen in competing internationally. Phuti’s long-term vision for Miss Independence Botswana is centred around growth, cultural impact, and sustainable development. She envisions the fashion show evolving into a globally recognised, culturally significant event that drives economic growth, supports emerging talent, and promotes sustainability. “My long-term vision is to create a platform that not only celebrates fashion but also empowers individuals and communities, leaving a lasting legacy of positive change,” she concluded.
