BIUST caps 335 graduates

This year’s graduation ceremony was held under the theme, ‘Bridging Academia with Industry: Navigating Entrepreneurial Excellence in STEM,’ and saw the largest cohort of graduates in the history of the learning institution. Of the 335 graduates, 265 were awarded undergraduate degrees while 68 received postgraduate qualifications including Master's degrees and PhD, marking another milestone in the university's commitment to academic excellence from different disciplines including science, engineering and technology. Speaking at the graduation ceremony, BIUST’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo said the institution strives to produce market-ready graduates such as the Class of 2024. According to Totolo, BIUST’s primary focus is centred around the academic value chain is defined by academic excellence, commercial participation and social relevance.
He said the learning institution has made strategic partnerships with key players in the industry to ensure that their goal is achieved. “Most of our students are given industry attachments, internships, and employment. From the numerous feedback we have received over the years, I can confidently attest that we hand over industry-ready graduates to this country’s commercial entities,” Totolo said. For his part, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane implored the BIUST Class of 2024 to significantly contribute to the transformation of the nation’s business and economy. He said the skills and knowledge they acquired during their study period are invaluable assets in propelling Botswana into economic diversification and global competitiveness. “As you embark on your respective journeys don't ignore academic laws. I urge you to embrace the rules as agents of change and champions of progress. The future rights are in your hands, depending on the actions that you take beyond this academic institution. “Your endeavour will change the future for the victory of our nation, guiding sustainable growth and prosperity for generations to come,” said the Vice President.
The BIUST Class of 2024 was awarded degrees in fields such as chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer and telecommunications engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, geological engineering, industrial and manufacturing engineering, materials and metallurgical engineering, mechanical and energy engineering, mechatronics and industrial engineering, and mining engineering. The list also includes biological sciences and biotechnology, computer science and software engineering, earth and environmental sciences, environmental sciences, forensic sciences, geology, information and data management, physics, pure and applied chemistry, pure and applied mathematics, and statistics.
