Passion drives ‘Katso’ into fashion design

Daman, (24), is currently studying BSc in Quantity Surveying. In an interview with Arts&Culture, Daman pointed out that with a unique perspective on design and structure, her fashion line reflects a blend of artistry and precision, offering stylish, modern, and well-crafted pieces for clients who appreciate elegance and individuality. The young fashion designer specialises in creating modern, stylish, and elegant designs that cater for individuals who would like to express their uniqueness through fashion. She explained that her designs reflect a blend of contemporary trends with timeless elements, ensuring that each piece is both fashionable and versatile. “At Style By Katso, I focus on crafting outfits that are not only visually appealing but also tailored to fit perfectly, with attention to detail and quality. My work ranges from casual wear to more formal and custom-made pieces, ensuring that every client feels confident and stylish in whatever they choose to wear. At first it was just a hobby, I used to do DIYs on my old clothes to turn them into something more trendy. As time went by, with the support from my family, I liked the idea of making a living while also doing something I love. So I guess my need for independence at a young age is what pursed and inspired me to take my hobby more seriously,” she said.
Furthermore, she pointed out that she had never been to a fashion school and had never had any formal education on sewing or fashion designing. She added that everything she knew she learnt through watching YouTube tutorials. She said she chose fashion designing because it was something really close to her heart. She explained that it was not just a passion, but has become a part of her identity through everything she picked up along the years. From an early age, she said she used to tear up her old clothes, even her siblings’ clothes, just because she had an idea she wanted to execute. She added that she likes seeing her imagination turning into a reality saying every successful DIY piece makes her fondness for fashion grows even more. Daman also noted that her clients often complimented her outfits and their quality. She said many expressed how her designs make them feel confident and stylish. Additionally, she stated that social media also played a significant role, where followers engage enthusiastically, sharing feedback and spreading the word about Style By Katso. She pointed out that the versatility of her designs resonated with a wide audience, from casual fashion lovers to those seeking bespoke and formal attire. “The most memorable masterpieces I made are two of my mother’s wedding celebration dresses. The reason being that it felt really good to finally be able to give back to my parents through the work they have supported me with all these years. The happiness and confidence my mother portrayed when she fitted the dresses is a memory I will always cherished and it has made me love my job even more. As a local fashion designer, one of the biggest challenges I faced was starting my business from scratch with no initial funding. Building Style By Katso meant navigating the complexities of launching a brand with limited resources, relying heavily on creativity, persistence, and support from my family,” she said.
“I started the business when I was doing first year and had to fund it with my book allowance. Securing materials, managing production, and marketing the brand without enough financial backing was tough, and I often had to make personal sacrifices to keep the business afloat. Since I started the business, I managed to save enough money to buy a car within just a year. I started other businesses, a picnic services business and a spa called Nails & Lashes by Katso this year. I am currently a student doing my final year in BSc in Quantity Surveying,” she proudly said.
