Hailing the moment as a true democratic process, Boko affirmed his commitment to the rule of law and praised Masisi for the smooth transition.

The new president said his admiration and respect for Masisi grew as it is not easy to not only accept defeat but to peacefully hand over power.

“This is our Botswana. This is what true democracy is, and I am truly humbled that President Masisi stuck to democratic principles,” he said.

Masisi took Boko on a tour of the Office of President together with the members of the media and introduced senior civil servants to the new leader.

After they took turns in salutation, Boko reaffirmed his commitment to an ‘agile government’.

Asked if he will make any changes in Government, Boko responded that it was too early to tell as he first needs time to assess government proceeding and how they have been doing things.

“I urge you to work on merit, whether you are my friend or not,” he said to the senior government officials.

At a press conference following the handover, the former President further explained why it was important to concede defeat and do the right thing.

“We lost elections, fact!”
