Leburu won himself Simmental bull zero tooth followed by Edwin Madigela in second position who walked away with a heifer zero tooth. Tinashe Chiwanga is a proud owner of a zero tooth ram after finishing in the third position and a meat master ewe went to Taboka Masalila for a position four finish. The bull was sponsored by Emeritus while the Heifer and Ram were sponsored by Sara Re and Grand Re respectively. The Ewe was sponsored by FMRE.
Speaking to SportMonitor, Leburu said although he is not a farmer, he knows a lot of farmers but he did not know what he was going to do with his prize. He said he will hopefully find some value somehow even if it means starting farming. “If it means I have to sell it to somebody who cares more about animals than me, so be it. I am proud, it was a good day for me. It does not come so often and I shoot Sub 90, maybe four times in a year. Today was my best score, a gross of 81 shots and 43 points 7 and under ever since I started playing golf. I am an amateur, far from being a Pro but I am doing good,” he said. Leburu said they played seven hours because the players start and stop, they wait for others but an ordinary 18 holes game should take four and half hours. He explained that he had to be patient, let everybody enjoy and it worked for him.
“This is my home course, I subscribe to Stanbic Gaborone Golf Club and I am the honorary treasurer of this club. I am familiar with the course, besides the heat which came after five holes of the start. My strength was in my drive, on a normal day I record 240 yard drive but today my longest drive was 280. Unfortunately I did not get a birdie but I got a lot of pars. My friend that I played with came with 37 points but lost on the count back,” Leburu said.
Meanwhile, Minet Botswana Business Units Manager-Marketing, Khumo Badisang, said the first edition of the tournament was held last year under the same theme, ‘Agriculture’ because they have an Agriculture product that they are promoting. She said the theme for the tournament is aligned with the business and what they want to achieve. She said the sponsors for the prizes are re-insurers being Emeritus Reinsurance, FBC RE (Botswana), FMRE Property and Casualty. She added that there was also a tractor on the hole in one sponsored by Phoenix of Botswana Assurance Company. However no one won the tractor because nobody was able to do a hole in one. Badisang said in 2023, they had 132 golfers, full field was 128, and this year they wanted to reduce the number but still had a full field of 128 golfers.
“We also wanted the event as an opportunity to network with our business partners. It is important for us to keep the business relationship growing. Most importantly this event assists us with our Community Social Responsibility (CSR). We want to assist the community with development programmes,” Badisang said. She explained that Minet Botswana is a trusted Pan-African advisor that meets the uncertainties of tomorrow by delivering risk and human capital solutions today.
