Monene led GU to a resounding 8-0 win over Police XI in a GACFA Women’s Division 1 League tie played at the Lekidi West grounds on Sunday morning. It was the biggest win in the opening weekend of the league as the defending champions started their campaign on a high note. ‘The Red Roses’ as the team is called, have been heavily active in the market, snatching some of the country’s top talents including the duo of Lesego Radiakanyo and Oteng Bonang from rivals Double Action. Monene said his side has been put wide in the open and it would be easy for rivals to plan against them. The gaffer said in a bid to avoid struggles this season, GU would need to be unpredictable in their line-ups and the roles assigned to players on match day. Monene on Sunday had Radiakanyo on the bench alongside full back, Kesegofetse Mochawe and the duo had been expected to start on the day. Monene is aware of the threat posed by a rejuvenated Township Rollers and Mazzotie FC while Security Systems cannot be ruled out. “People know our team and sometimes you have to be tactically good and play around with players. If they expect to see Lesego (Radiakanyo), sometimes you have to start her on the bench and that is how we should play this league. We are not an unknown team and players we have, if you look at Police, I had no idea about them but they do know us,” said Monene.
GU were ahead on the eighth minute as Keitumetse Dithebe tucked in a pass from Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse. Jessica Modise doubled the team’s lead five minutes later as GU took a 2-0 lead in to the break. Jessica Maphonga made it 3-0 just two minutes after recess. Radiakanyo, from the bench, marked her debut with a goal on the 75th minute before Dithebe got her second of the day and GU's fifth a minute later. Gaone Macala beat her own goalkeeper in attempt to clear Radiakanyo’s cross to gift GU a sixth of the match on the 80th minute. Laone Moloi had it 7-0 on the 83rd minute before 15-year-old Amogelang Sebotho marked her debut with a goal on the 87th minute to wrap up a very dominant performance by the Red Roses.
