Speaking to Sport Monitor, DMSS assistant coach, Carthage Sorinyane said preparations for the National Championships were intense and they were held at UB 50 meters pool so that swimmers can get accustomed to it. “I am happy with the performance of my swimmers. They have been going through a lot of adversities besides swimming like fatigue due to the hot weather. They pushed themselves to the highest level and prove that we are the best. Look, in Sport, everyone has ups and downs, but our development squad did their best much better than last year. We had swimmers breaking national records,” he said. Sorinyane said the senior swimmers also had their share of ups and downs, adding that DMSS registered more than 80 swimmers. “The presence of Olympian, Maxine Egner was a motivation to our younder swimmers. We were using her as a guide to them on how they should take thei5 races,” he said.
For her part, Egner who represented Botswana at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games said it was fun to swim back at home. “I just came back for the National Championships, I did not swim many Personal Best (PBs). It is obviously very hot interms of weather condition. I competed in events including relays. I am now based in United States of America (USA), where I train and schooling. But I have realised that local swimmers have started swimming very fast, which is a good thing,” she said.
Egner further said her year has been eventful including swimming at the Olympics. The second position was scooped by Propellers swimming club with Gaborone Aquatics Club. The 19th BSSA National Championships were attended by around 300 swimmers from local clubs.
