Red Roses set eyes on block playoffs

Red Roses made it three regional league wins in three years over the past weekend. The team has clinched the title with three games to spare while 10 points in the lead. GU have now qualified for the South Block playoffs that are to determine the last four teams to play in the national championship playoffs, the DTCB Women’s Championship. The block playoffs are to be played in June shortly after the completion of the regional leagues while the Championship playoffs are to follow in early July. GU’s head coach, William ‘Raizor’ Monene, said his side will use the remainder of the regional league campaign to prepare for the block playoffs.

“I think winning the league has helped us because this time around there is not much time (between the end of the league and the block playoffs). We have won the league with three games to go and I think we will use those to prepare; we do not have time to prepare,” said Monene. He was speaking to SportMonitor at the Kick Out Violence Football Tournament held at the Molepolole Sports Complex on Saturday. The tournament featured the game between GU and Mexican Girls and the Red Roses won the tie 3-1, thanks to the goals from Tshepiso Marogwe, Jessica Maponga and Masa Keagakwa. GU on the tie used the majority of the fringe players and Monene was pleased with their good showing. Meanwhile the South and North First Division leagues are to be implemented from the next season.

The top two teams in each region are to qualify for the league model as the women’s game inches closer to the formation of a national league. The fight for the runners up spot is fully on in the GCRFA Division One league. Second placed Double Action are just a point ahead of Security Systems who sit third with three games to play. Mazzottie FC are not far with 20 points from the fourth spot and just three behind Double Action.
