BAA says athletes protected from exploitation

He said organisers should seek permission from the BAA and abide by the rules. The association reiterated its position after a recent race in which athletes were not given prizes contrary to what they were promised before the race.
He said that organisers of races must liaise with a BAA affiliated club in their region so that the association can be represented.
Ramatshaba noted that they discourage athletes from participating in events that are not sanctioned by the association.
Some athletes have complained that some race organisers take advantage of them because they are aware that the runners are desperate for money.
A long distance runner, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals told Mmegi Sport that he is forced to participate in any marathon because he needs money and it is easy for the organisers to take advantage of him.
He said it is unfortunate that the BAA does not care about long distance runners and they are only recognised when they have represent the country in international events.
He complained that they cannot be expected to perform well against athletes from other countries because they do not have proper training and equipment. He claimed their welfare is not a priority for the BAA.
But Ramatshaba said the athletes are taken care of by the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) when they go for international competitions.
He stated that the association does not buy running shoes for any athlete.
Meanwhile, the BAA ordinary meeting will be held over the weekend at Oasis Motel. Ramatshaba said that one of the major issues to be discussed is the BAA calendar of events. He said the cross-country season starts this month until March next year.
