Lack of sponsorship cripples BOTESSA

BOTESSA secretary general, Mosalagae Moalosi said it is difficult to attract sponsors, which hampers their ability to host competitions. He said the other disadvantage is that their members are scattered across the country, which makes it expensive and cumbersome to organise competitions. “This has also made it difficult for us to identify and nurture talent,” he said.

BOTESSA hosts the Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in Francistown tomorrow where athletes will compete in 13 disciplines. Moalosi said they tried to get financial backing for the competition but they were unsuccessful. The championship is BOTESSA’s last event of the year where best teams and players from its three regions do battle for national honours. Director of Sports and Recreation, Falcon Sedimo will grace the event.

Moalosi said the championship would help them select athletes for the Confederation of Universities and Colleges of Southern Africa (CUCSA), International University Sports Federation (FISU) and Federation of African Sports University (FASU) games in 2014 and 2015.

He said the games are important as athletes get an opportunity to be spotted by international scouts. “Therefore it is important for us to have enough resources to groom players,” he explained.
