Phikwe man shoots burglar

Police commander Superintendent Victor Nlebesi said the incident happened when the council employee and his family were woken up by footsteps outside the house whereupon they found two men in the living room armed with stones and iron bars.

It is understood that in self-defence the house owner pulled out his gun and fired a shot that injured one of the intruders before they fled.

Nlebesi said the blood trail led them to a nearby hill where they caught the injured foreign national. The suspect was wounded on the leg and hips.

He added that the police also recovered a television set not far from the injured man. Another TV was found outside the yard of the house next to where the shooting occurred.

Nlebesi further noted that the police identified the injured man as a suspect who had appeared before court for burglary and other offences.

'He was identified through his facial appearance. He is still recuperating in hospital and he will appear in court upon discharge. His companion is still on the run,' he added.  He said investigations into the case were still ongoing and confirmed that the gun that was used in the shooting was licensed.

Nlebesi believes that the suspect who has been wanted by the police may be linked to a series of related cases around Selebi-Phikwe and Mmadinare.
