Local golfers urged to improve their scores

Mushango told Mmegi Sport after the 2013 Orange Golf Classics Championships that were held at Phakalane Golf Estate over the weekend that Batswana golfers' scores were not recognised when they participated in the international arena because they were high.

David Masole of Gaborone Golf Club walked away as the winner with a gross score of 78. Mushango said the championship division score was par 73 and the winner should have scored less than that.

He said it was unfortunate that Masole won the championship with five overs, as that was not good enough. He said players from other countries usually bring lower scores.

'BGU will be holding a camp for the juniors starting from December 9 in Gaborone. During the camp we will work on the golfers and one of the main elements will be to assist them to improve their play.

We are also selecting the national team for the Zambia Triangular scheduled for next month,' said Mushango.

He said when the national team is on camp, BGU organises coaches to work with the players until such time when they depart for the tournament.

He said BGU had a strategic plan aimed at developing junior players and they would be taken to play in tournaments outside the country as a way of bench marking.

Meanwhile, golfers who will participate in the 2014 Gary Player Country Pro-Am in Sun City are Sidney Moseki, Robert Mpabanga and Stanley Mokwele.

Last wekend's championship also contributed points towards the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Golf Championship that will be held in Namibia next year.
