Aon Botswana donates to MoESD

Education Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi accepted over 500 copies of the book, Astronomy for South Central Africa, worth P100,000 yesterday. The book has been endorsed by famous astronomer, Sir Patrick Moore. She applauded Aon for funding the publication of the book as well as the donation, saying that it would excite young people to pick up interest in the study of the universe.

'By educating people, you are giving them the tools and means not only to understand their world and their social experience, but you are also giving them an opportunity to change the world,' she said.

She further expressed pleasure at private sector organisations such as Aon that take part in education. The initiative is part of the MoESD's drive to encourage businesses to support education through various interventions ranging from donation of ICT equipment, infrastructure and curriculum support, among others.

Aon Botswana Managing Director Thapelo Matsheka said that he hoped the book would increase awareness in the local education system on a subject largely a mystery to most, and motivate as well as generate interest in this field. With a foreword by founding Zambian president Dr Kenneth Kaunda, it will be available in schools in seven regional countries where Aon is doing business namely Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
